What is Mattermost?
The self-hosted Slack alternative teams actually move to: channels, threads and integrations on infrastructure you control.
Mattermost is a self-hosted team chat platform. It has the shape teams expect: channels, threads, direct messages, file sharing, full-text search. Add Slack-compatible webhooks, slash commands and bot accounts, plus native desktop and mobile apps. It also ships tooling to import a Slack export, so a migration brings your channels and message history with it.
Team chat is where everything ends up: incident timelines, credentials pasted into DMs, product plans, HR conversations. On a SaaS messenger that entire record sits under someone else’s retention policy, in someone else’s country. Self-hosting Mattermost keeps it on infrastructure you control, under rules you set.
The catch: self-hosting means someone has to run it. Reverse proxy, TLS, a database to operate, file storage that only grows, monthly releases to track, security patches, backups of every message your company has ever sent. That someone is usually you, at the worst possible time.
Mattermost, without the ops.
Everything below is what you’d otherwise build and babysit yourself.
Your conversations stay where you put them.
Deploy to ch-zh1 (Zurich), fr-pa1 (Paris) or de-fr1 (Frankfurt). Messages, files and integrations stay in the region you choose, under Swiss or EU law and in line with GDPR.
Reviewed before it ships.
Our Mattermost package is reviewed, secured and locked to versions we have tested, and it ships with a runbook. We track CVEs upstream and patch them fast.
Leave Slack, keep the history.
Mattermost ships tooling to import a Slack export: channels, users, message history. Your team lands in a workspace that already looks familiar, minus the third-party retention policy.
TLS, upgrades, scaling: handled.
Certificates issued and renewed, rolling zero-downtime updates, instant rollback, health checks. Mattermost ships new releases every month; we keep you current without breaking your team’s channels.
Backups you can actually restore.
Offsite backups of your messages, files and settings. We run restore drills, not just snapshots.
Leave whenever you want.
Your exit is built in: messages, files and configuration leave with you, in usable form. Pilae runs Mattermost for you. It never owns your conversations.
Self-hosting Mattermost: DIY vs Pilae.
Both paths end with Mattermost in production. Only one of them ends there this afternoon.
| Self-hosted DIY | On Pilae | |
|---|---|---|
| Initial setup | Docker, reverse proxy, DNS, auth. An afternoon if nothing fights back | One click, live in minutes |
| TLS certificates | Issue, wire up, remember to renew | Issued and renewed automatically |
| Upgrades | Frequent releases to track, test and apply yourself | Tested versions, rolled out with instant rollback |
| Security patching | You watch the CVE feed | Upstream tracked, CVEs prioritized |
| Backups | cron + object storage + hope | Offsite, verified with restore drills |
| Data residency | Wherever your VPS happens to be | You pick: Zurich, Paris, Frankfurt, or your own racks |
| 3 a.m. failures | Yours | Ours |
| Slack migration | Export, transform, bulk-import: script it yourself | Documented path in the runbook; import tooling ready to run |
| Attachment storage | Watch the volume fill, migrate it yourself | Provisioned, monitored, backed up offsite |
From catalog to production in three steps.
No servers to set up, no configuration to write. The platform work is already done.
Pick Mattermost.
Find it in the catalog: reviewed, secured, locked to tested versions, runbook included.
Choose where it runs.
A Pilae region in Switzerland, France or Germany, or your own machine connected through a secure tunnel. Same console either way.
Deploy and move your team in.
One click to production with TLS and backups from day one. Import your Slack export if you have one, invite your team, done.
Your team’s conversations are sensitive. Keep them close.
Every Mattermost deployment is pinned to the region you choose. Encryption, dedicated VLANs, and the option to hold your own encryption keys for regulated workloads. Or skip our regions entirely and run it on-prem.
Deploying Mattermost: the questions we get.
If yours isn’t here, reach out and we’ll answer it, usually the same day.
What’s the easiest way to self-host Mattermost?
Deploying it through a managed platform. On Pilae you pick Mattermost from the catalog, choose a region, and click deploy. TLS, backups, patching and upgrades are handled for you from the first minute. You get self-hosting’s control without its ops.
Can Mattermost replace Slack?
For most teams, yes. Channels, threads, direct messages, file sharing, search, webhooks, slash commands and bots: the daily workflow maps over directly, and Mattermost’s webhooks are Slack-compatible, so many integrations move with you. The difference is where the data lives: on your infrastructure, not theirs.
Can I import my Slack history into Mattermost?
Yes. Mattermost ships tooling to convert and bulk-import a Slack workspace export: channels, users and message history. On Pilae the runbook documents the path, so migration day is a procedure, not a research project.
Does Mattermost have desktop and mobile apps?
Yes. Native apps for Windows, macOS and Linux, plus iOS and Android, all pointed at your own server. Your team gets the messenger experience they expect while the data stays in the region you chose.
How do Mattermost updates and security patches work on Pilae?
We track upstream, prioritize CVEs, and ship updates locked to versions we have tested, rolled out with zero downtime and instant rollback. Mattermost releases monthly; you stay current without watching the release feed.
Can I move my Mattermost deployment off Pilae later?
Yes, and that’s by design. Your data exits with you in usable form: messages, files, configuration. No proprietary formats, no lock-in.
